Michael Tony Mbusa
Head of Innovation & Product Development
Michael Tony Mbusa is a seasoned leader in banking and fintech with over 16 years of experience spanning retail banking, microfinance, digital financial services, digital transformation, and organizational change management.
At FINCA Uganda, he heads the Innovation & Product Development function, overseeing project management, alternative delivery channels, product development, innovation management, and grants management. His work focuses on advancing digital transformation and expanding financial inclusion for underserved communities.
Michael is widely experienced in business development, innovation strategy, strategic governance, digital financial services, product development, project management, marketing channel development, organizational cultural transformation, business process re-engineering, and risk and operational control management.
His career began in retail banking, where he built a strong foundation in customer service, branch management, and portfolio growth. At dfcu Bank, he managed flagship branches before being appointed the inaugural Senior Manager – Agency Banking, where he successfully rolled out agency banking nationwide. He later joined the Agent Banking Company of Uganda (ABC) as Acting Chief Executive Officer and Head of Channels Management, leading Africa’s first interoperable agent banking platform.
An award-winning leader, Michael was named Employee of the Year (2017) at dfcu Bank and received several Board commendations for outstanding performance and innovation.
He holds a First-Class MBA from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (ESAMI) and has pursued advanced executive education in Project Management, Finance, Microfinance, Leadership, Risk Management, and Digital Transformation at the Maastricht School of Management (Netherlands), Strathmore Business School, Digital Frontiers Institute (South Africa), and the Boulder Institute of Microfinance (Italy). He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Education (Economics) from Makerere University.
Michael is passionate about leveraging retail banking expertise, microfinance, digital innovation, and strategic partnerships to build sustainable financial ecosystems that transform lives.
