James Onyutta is a microfinance and banking professional with more than 20 years of demonstrated leadership in design, execution, and scaling of impactful financial services to populations who are most needy and vulnerable. At FINCA he leads an Executive team focused on FINCA’s vision to build a network of sustainable and scalable social enterprises that improve lives. Under his leadership, FINCA Uganda is empowering its customers through access to sustainable financial solutions.
James’ executive career spans over one and a half decades. He serves as CEO and Managing Director of FINCA Uganda a position he has held since 2016. Prior to that he served as a director and CEO of Musoni Kenya, the world’s first institution to provide a cashless/branchless banking concept delivered through Mpesa Mobile money and powered by a data driven business model, a position he held for over 3 years. James is a finance professional by educational background & prior to his CEO roles he led finance teams as Chief Finance Officer in FINCA Tanzania and FINCA Uganda over 5 years from 2008 to 2013.
A Ugandan by birth with work experience in East & Central Africa, James is a graduate of the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management and a Certified Expert in Risk Management. He possesses a First-Class Honors degree in Bachelor of Business and Management from Uganda Martyrs University in Nkozi, Uganda, and is an ACCA-UK Certified Chartered Accountant
